Q&A

Moving to an Island I was aware that we would have issues. Getting here was an issue, adventure, frustration and amazement. And to ease the of explanation some of the words I am going to use please visit our Vocabulary page

What brought us here? Squirrel mentality that somehow had follow through.

What have we learned in our first year here? Logistics are a nightmare, the local groups don’t always have what you are looking for, and if you can’t find it you are going to pay for it to get here.
The weather is beautiful year round, but mold season is real.
Electricity is my most expensive bill, by leaps and bounds. I want solar panels but instead of real math it seams that the companies go by what you pay the electric company and try to make your payments match. So off to smaller companies, but currently I can’t have solar cause I am unemployed. That is another story.

What have you done since moving? Well I bought a house that wasn’t in the best repair. So this first year has been fixing the neglect and improving on the house we have. When I was house hunting it was like the 2nd house I was serious about asking about. Which is wild because my old home it was seriously months of looking and then there was the walk through day with a realtor who made it clear that with my budget it was all I was getting. She didn’t even stick to my criteria or what I was looking for. But 2007 so you get how that house went.
This house, I kept seeing it online and laughed at it a LOT. Which should have told me right there something was up with my brain. It isn’t a big house. 2 story only because of the Ohana. It is a house on Pillars, the house itself is about 700 sq ft, with another 300+ attached Lanai. It needs love. There were decisions made that weren’t the smartest but attracted me to it. The lanai was covered in clear roofing. It was amazing…ly like a global warming experiment, and there is no air conditioning in this house. With the price of electric there won’t be either. besides that It would be a bad deal since the original house is missing 2 walls. They are just open to the elements. Breezes called the tradewinds do amazing at cooling the house…once I got rid of the clear roofing. I am in the back of the house and can feel the wind blow through here.
We tore out the bathroom upstairs and had it redone, with stuff I could find on the island. We traded out the siding glass “front” door in the back for french doors. Then went to the front of the house and added a front door, with a staircase so you can enter from the front of the house onto the lanai.
New flooring, I got it onsale….why do you ask.

What is this site all about? We wanted to share our home projects, DIY projects, blog, gaming and all the shiny stuff in our lives that distract us on a daily bases.
Teki wants to create a how to guides on fixing stuff. And I want to show how we make things like the pantry on the lanai, which was a bit of using space that wasn’t being used for shelves.
Knowing me, I am not going to be as dedicated as Teki will.

Will there be more questions here? Yes eventually
